Editor's Peg Perego Skate Stroller Review:
The Skate is Peg Perego's response to the Bugaboo Cameleon stroller system. It's positioned as Peg's highest end stroller offering and has many features which allow it to compete well in the luxury stroller arena. A few features that set the Skate stroller apart from the rest is the seats ability to transform from bassinet to toddler seat as well as the seats ability to move vertically along the for multiple height adjustments. Many other features will be discussed in this review. We weren't so found of the free motions 5 point harness or the stroller's hefty weight at 34lbs.
The Skates seat converts from full bassinet to toddler seat via strap adjustment. Unlike most strollers, including the Bugaboo Cameleon, the Peg Perego Skate doesn't require additional purchase or storage of bassinet because it's all one unit. Padding is very plush and should have no problem keeping your child comfortable for extended rides. The Skate 5 point harness was designed to allow more freedom of movement than most others. We weren't sure if this was the intended design or just a mistake as we feel the 5 point harness should do a better job at restricting movement and retaining a child. This was a considerable safety concern.
The Skates handlebars are both height adjustable and angle adjustable allowing users of varying height to really dial in a comfortable position. The adjustment requires only a few quick steps and should allow for easy customization for multiple parent use. The seat is also height adjustable and can be positioned further up or down the stroller frame. Height adjustment allows the user to bring their child closer to them for a more interactive strolling experience. Also, by elevating your child from the ground, you remove them from harmful auto exhaust, feisty pets and road debris. A higher seat should also help save your back from constant bending over. Height adjustability also allows you to park the Skate tableside and eliminate the need for filthy restaurant provided high chairs.
Additional ride comfort is provided by front suspension and seat padding. The front 6.5 inch wheels are constructed from solid rubber, ensuring minimal maintenance by eliminating chance of flats. 10 inch rear wheels are air-filled and don't offer suspension. Tread on the tires is intended for street use and aren't overally aggressive. If you looking to do more travel off-road, you may consider the Bugaboo Cameleon, Phil & Teds Sport or Bob Revolution strollers. Front wheels are lockable, beneficial for long straight walks and tracking over uneven terrain.
The frames design allows for easy folding and has an overall compact fold. We liked the fact that the all-in-one seat folds without requiring removal. This was a big differentiator over the Bugaboo Cameleon and makes transport a lot easier. Once folded Peg Perego stands up straight and can actually be pulled around with the handle like wheeled luggage, very smart. The all aluminum frame is rigid and durable. Integrated rear brake can be adjusted with the foot and offer secure wheel locking power. Under seat storage consists of netting with bungee cords which is great for strapping in larger items like diaper bags, but not so good for restraining smaller items as the basket lacks depth.
The Peg Perego is a great Bugaboo Cameleon alternative and will garner its fair share of envious mom stares. If you are looking to not only use the Skate on smooth but Off-road surfaces as well, you may want to look at some of the previously mentioned strollers. Weight is also a big factor at 34 lbs, making the Skate stroller a bad choice for air travel. This aside, smooth ride offers innovative design and great looks.
