Carriage Stroller Overview:
The baby carriage is commonly also called a pram and was the first type of baby stroller ever created. It's sole function was to carry babies from point A to B without the need to carry by hand, invented in the 1730 for an English Duke. The concept was revolutionary and was the birthplace of the modern stroller industry. The Carriage resembled a small horse drawn carriage and was only owned by people with wealth and stature.
Today's best example of the traditional Pram or Carriage is still manufactured by Inglesina (Classica Pram). Styling for the most part is old school and offers little in the form or functionality but is heavy on style. It's a be and be seen item with limited practicality, especially in comparison to more modern stroller design. It is still a large, cumbersome basket on gigantic wheels that does not collapse and clears quite a path on the street. Meant for urban strolls, carriages are still beloved by the metropolitan upper class, modern-day royalty and celebrity moms. While most carriages cost around $1000, there are $400 and $4000 versions. They offer baby a plush ride, many even sporting ornate curtains to deter peeping paparazzi.
Carriages are very bulky and aren't as portable as most other strollers categories. Most do not include baskets or any other typical stroller features like cup holders or adjustable handles. But what they lack in conveniences, they make up for old royalty style. If you are considering purchasing a pram, realize that you will most likely need other strollers for your day-to-day activities. Buy a pram because you like the style and want to get a few classic pics.
